On the feedback of stratospheric clouds on polar climate

چکیده
[1] Past climates, such as the Eocene (55 38 Ma), experienced dramatically warmer polar winters. Global climate models run with Eocene-like boundary conditions have under-predicted polar temperatures, a discrepancy which has stimulated a recent hypothesis that polar stratospheric clouds may have been important. We propose that such clouds form in response to higher CO2 via changes in stratospheric circulation and water content. We show that the absence of this mechanism from models of Eocene climate may be attributable to poor vertical resolution in the neighborhood of the tropical tropopause. This may cause the models to underestimate future greenhouse warming.

The impact of polar stratospheric ozone loss on Southern Hemisphere stratospheric circulation and climate
The impact of polar stratospheric ozone loss resulting from chlorine activation on polar stratospheric clouds is examined using a pair of model integrations run with the fully coupled chemistry climate model UM-UKCA. Suppressing chlorine activation through heterogeneous reactions is found to produce modelled ozone differences consistent with observed ozone differences between the present and pr...
متن کاملInfluence of interactive stratospheric chemistry on large-scale air mass exchange in a global circulation model
A new globally uniform Lagrangian transport scheme for large ensembles of passive tracer particles is presented and applied to wind data from a coupled atmosphere-ocean climate model that includes interactive dynamical feedback with stratospheric chemistry. This feedback from the chemistry is found to enhance large-scale meridional air mass exchange in the northern winter stratosphere as well a...

متن کاملSimulation of polar stratospheric clouds in the chemistry-climate-model EMAC via the submodel PSC
The submodel PSC of the ECHAM5/MESSy Atmospheric Chemistry model (EMAC) has been developed to simulate the main types of polar stratospheric clouds (PSC). The parameterisation of the supercooled ternary solutions (STS, type 1b PSC) in the submodel is based on Carslaw et al. (1995b), the thermodynamic approach to simulate ice particles (type 2 PSC) on Marti and Mauersberger (1993). For the forma...
متن کاملClimate change and atmospheric chemistry: how will the stratospheric ozone layer develop?
The discovery of the ozone hole over Antarctica in 1985 was a surprise for science. For a few years the reasons of the ozone hole was speculated about. Soon it was obvious that predominant meteorological conditions led to a specific situation developing in this part of the atmosphere: Very low temperatures initiate chemical processes that at the end cause extreme ozone depletion at altitudes of...
